Protected trees, TPOs and conservation areas

Some trees in Somerset and Dorset are protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or stand in a conservation area. Work on a protected tree needs consent from Somerset Council or Dorset Council first, and the liability for unauthorised work falls on the tree owner, not the contractor.

We check whether a tree is protected before any work is agreed, and we only carry out work on a protected tree once consent is in place. If you are not sure, mention it on the form and we will look into it for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stump grinding and removal?
Grinding takes the stump down below the surface and leaves the roots in the ground to rot away. Full removal takes the stump and main roots out, which is needed for some building and planting work.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Grinding below ground level stops most stumps from regrowing. A few species can send up shoots from the roots, and we will tell you if yours is one of them and what to do about it.
What happens to the grindings?
You can keep them as mulch for borders, or we take them away and leave the area backfilled and level. Just tell us which you prefer when we quote.
Can you reach stumps in a back garden?
In most cases, yes. Tell us how wide the narrowest access point is, such as a side gate, and we will plan the job around it.
How much does stump grinding cost?
It depends on the number and size of stumps, the species, access and whether you want the grindings taken away. We give a free quote once we know the job.
Do you grind stumps left by other contractors?
Yes. We grind stumps from trees we have felled and stumps left from older jobs, whether it is one stump or a whole site.
