Protected trees, TPOs and conservation areas

Some trees in Somerset and Dorset are protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or stand in a conservation area. Work on a protected tree needs consent from Somerset Council or Dorset Council first, and the liability for unauthorised work falls on the tree owner, not the contractor.

We check whether a tree is protected before any work is agreed, and we only carry out work on a protected tree once consent is in place. If you are not sure, mention it on the form and we will look into it for you.

Frequently asked questions

What size of site can you clear?
Anything from an overgrown garden plot to a development site. We cleared a site in Weymouth ready for new homes, working with our own machinery and operators alongside the tree team.
Can you clear a site during nesting season?
Disturbing active nests is an offence, so clearance in spring and summer needs a check first. We work alongside ecologists and plan the work around what they find.
Do I need permission to clear trees from my land?
Protected trees need council consent, and larger amounts of felling can need a felling licence from the Forestry Commission. We check what applies to your site before work starts.
What happens to the timber and brash?
Timber is recycled into firewood, woodchip goes to local farms, horse yards and animal sanctuaries, and green waste is composted where appropriate.
Do you remove stumps as part of clearance?
Yes. Stumps can be ground below the surface or fully removed, depending on whether the ground is being turfed, landscaped or built on.
How much does site clearance cost?
It depends on the size of the site, the amount and type of vegetation, access and what happens to the waste. We visit the site and give you a free quote.
