What our crown reduction and pruning covers

Crown reduction, thinning, lifting, pruning and pollarding to bring light back into your garden and keep your trees healthy, safe and in proportion.

Crown reduction

Reducing the height and spread of the crown to take weight off the tree and keep it in proportion with the garden.

Crown thinning and lifting

Thinning lets more light through the canopy, and lifting raises the lower branches clear of roofs, paths and lawns.

Pollarding

Cutting back to established pollard points, the traditional way to manage willows, limes and other suitable trees.

Deadwood and storm damage

Removing dead, split or hanging branches before they fall onto the house, the car or the neighbours.

Reach without damage

Our tracked Spider MEWP reaches tall crowns from the basket and fits through a 0.78 metre gap.

What crown reduction and pruning costs

Your priceFree quoteQuoted after we have seen the job
Every job is different, so we do not publish a price list. The price depends on:
  • The size, species and condition of the tree
  • Access, and how close it is to buildings, roads or cables
  • Whether the tree is protected and needs consent
  • What happens to the timber, brash and woodchip

Protected trees, TPOs and conservation areas

Some trees in Somerset and Dorset are protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or stand in a conservation area. Work on a protected tree needs consent from Somerset Council or Dorset Council first, and the liability for unauthorised work falls on the tree owner, not the contractor.

We check whether a tree is protected before any work is agreed, and we only carry out work on a protected tree once consent is in place. If you are not sure, mention it on the form and we will look into it for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between crown reduction and thinning?
Crown reduction makes the whole crown smaller, reducing height and spread. Crown thinning keeps the size but removes selected branches so more light and wind pass through. We will recommend the one that suits your tree.
Is pollarding the same as crown reduction?
No. Pollarding cuts back to the same points again and again and suits trees that are already managed that way. Crown reduction shapes a natural crown. Topping a tree that has never been pollarded can harm it, so we will advise first.
When is the best time to prune a tree?
Most trees can be pruned through the year, though late winter suits many species and some are best left until after nesting season. We will tell you the right timing for your tree.
Do I need permission to prune my tree?
If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area, the council must give consent before pruning. We check this before any work is agreed.
How much does crown reduction cost?
It depends on the size and species of the tree, how much is being taken off, access and waste. We look at the tree and give you a free quote, so you know the cost before anything starts.
Can you reach trees in a back garden?
Usually, yes. Our tracked Spider MEWP fits through a 0.78 metre gap and has a 23 metre working height and 12 metre outreach, so tall trees behind houses are within reach.
